Life is a journey...Keep it that Way

I just came up with this quote a few minutes ago. I really amaze myself sometimes.

Race #2

Frosty's Frozen 5 Mile
5 Mile/10 Mile Run
I volunteered for the Rudolph's Revenge race in December, so I was offered a free race. I chose to run the Frosty's Frozen 5 Mile run. I didn't want to run the 10 mile because it was too long and I had the Chilly Cheeks Duathlon #2 the day before.

I got to Chatfield State Park with about 30 minutes to spare. No time to waste!! I checked in, went to the restroom...one last time... and put my stuff in the car. It was time to race.

When we started, it felt really easy to run fast. I tried my hardest this time to control myself. I did just that. My first mile wasn't all out. About mile 2.5 was the turn off point. I grabbed my water and went left. Everyone I was running with went straight. That's pretty odd. The running terrain wasn't the best. The first half was great. No snow. The second half was some snow the whole way.

I noticed there were about 3 people in striking distance. Long story short...I caught one. The other two were about 30 seconds away. I just couldn't catch them. I slowed a little at the finish because there was a good amount of snow and I didn't want to trip in front of all those people.

I finished 5th place overall and 1st in my age division! I reached my goal. I finished 1st in something. My "Beer pint trophy" is pretty cool.

Total time: 33:04
Avg Pace: 6:35/mile
Distance: 5 miles
Calories Burned: 593
Mile 1: 6:12, Mile 2: 6:34, Mile 3: 6:48, Mile 4: 6:47, Mile 5: 6:34

Race Weekend

1.5 Mile Run, 3.3 Mile Bike, 2.5 Mile Run, 6.6 Mile Bike

I woke up with decent time to spare, but the morning sure did move fast. I was getting things ready to go and I felt rushed. It snowed 2-4 inches the night before so I had to make a quick decision about my bike. There was no choice. I grabbed my mountain bike and headed to the race.

When I got to Cherry Creek State Park, I didn't have much time. I quickly got ready and it was almost time to race. I didn't have a drink cage, so I decided it was time to put one on. It sure wasn't thinking when I put it on...I put it on backwards. I had to quickly change it and ran to the start line.

I was in wave "A". The race director combined several of waves. I ran with wave A and B. The first leg was 1.5 miles. My first mile was awesome. The half mile was a little slow. The snow (lots of powder) started to slow me. I was ranked 2nd or 3rd place overall. I was pretty shocked to see that I was in such a great ranking. I ran to the transition area. I grabbed my bike and off I went. Transition time was a little over a minute. I had my tennis shoes on so I didn't have to make a long transition.

The first bike leg was 3.5 miles (or so...). It was interesting riding in the snow again. I was certain I was going to crash. I am pretty familiar with the park so I knew where the downhill and uphill spots were. I only had one or two people pass me during the big leg. Not too shabby.

The second run leg was 2.5 miles. It seemed a little longer. I did well, but not as I hoped. There were several runners who passed me. My pace slowed quite a bit and I just couldn't keep a fast pace. The snow was hard to run on. I didn't know where I was going at first, but I finally found my way. Too bad I had to stop and waste time trying to figure out where I was going.

Transition #2 was faster. It was less than a minute. Again I grabbed my bike and off I went. This ride was two loops. I didn't crash and had maybe one or two riders pass me. As I was about to finish, I placed my bike on the rack and ran towards the finish. It was a 50 meter dash to the end. What a funny feeling it was...

I finished the race with a time of 1:10:57. My overall rank was 21st and I finished 12th in my age division. I was got a few more point for the overall standings and was happy that I only slipped a little during the run. No injuries!

Running while Traveling

This week has been a very unusual week. I drove with my family to South Carolina. We crammed 5 adults into a Kia and traveled 1,600+ miles. This really was pretty crazy. I will do things differently next time. I will bring my wife with me and either drive or fly. I saved lots of money by traveling with my parents.

Enough said. The funeral service went well. My grandmother was a good person and will be greatly missed. I didn't shed a tear, but I was close a couple times. Grandma hasn't been well for over 12 years now. This made it easier for me because she has been suffering for a long time.

My grandmothers last words were: "Come and get me Jesus, I have suffered long enough". Pretty amazing, especially that she hasn't spoke for so long.

My training went pretty well while I was gone. I ran several times. I woke up early, twice, before a long car drive.

1/8/08 5:16am, Time: 53:19, 6.75 miles, 7:54/mile, 921 calories
1/11/08 9:22am, Time: 42:42, 5.42 miles, 7:53/mile, 549 calories
1/13/08 5:16am, Time: 57:38, 7.0 miles, 8:14/mile, 951 calories

My first and third run were in Grain Valley, Missouri. We stayed there both times and I ran about the same area. It is pretty funny to see that I ran at the same time too. I brought all my running gear with me, including my headlight.

Final Thoughts...
I feel very blessed. I have discovered that I am doing all this triathlon and stuff because "I can". This may seem silly, but it's true. I have the ability and the will to keep myself healthy, fit and love life. THANK YOU for all your prayers!!!

Now its back to the pool and bike! Yeah!

Leaving Town

My Grandmother in South Carolina passed away last night. My family is leaving today and we are driving. The drive is about a 25 hour long drive. Yikes. My training is now put on pause. Ah...man...No swimming...not bicycling...

Well, my bike is in the shop for a tune up, so I wasn't going to ride it until at least Wednesday. I am extremely dedicated like many other triathletes. I am still not sure how much training I will get in. I might wake up extremely early and go running?? At least I can run and do my exercises.

My Grandma was awesome. I have many great fond memories of her and the times we traveled to South Carolina (at least 16 times). We went to places like Disneyland, Myrtle Beach, DC, and so many others. My grandma would always say "come give your grandma some sugar". She will be missed. I haven't cried yet...but I am sure it might be coming?

Trophy Series Race

Today was a great day for racing. The snow is still here, but has melted quite a bit. The RMRR Trophy series race was today and it was at Twin Lake Parks in Westminster. The distance for the race is 10k.

I have done over a dozen 10k races, but the majority of them are the Boulder Bolder. It has been many years since I have run a really great race in BB. I always get sick and end up feeling crappy for half the day. Things have changed since I started triathlon and my core exercises. I only feel tired...which I think is very normal. I may cough a little too, but nothing serious.

My predict time was under 41:00 minutes. My PR for the BB was 42:23. If I run well, I will finish with a PR.

The race went well and I got a PR. I ran the race in exactly 41:00. I was pretty happy and missed my predict time by about 15 seconds. Not to bad.
